In hotels 5 stars is the new 3

I've noticed lately that new '5 star' hotels are popping up all over. I'm not sure if this designation is up to the hotel or an outside body. But it is clear that these hotels are redefining what it means to be 5 star.

My biggest complaint is their service. I guess if they had never said 5 star I wouldn't have such high expectations. the poor staff must take the brunt of complaints from guests who expect minimum standards of attention to detail and follow through. Shouldn't housekeeping understand 'do not disturb'?

curious as to what you want and are looking for. exactly. general "good customer service" is too much to ask. be specific. and go for that. the hotel industry is expanding cause it's flush with funds from the uptick in travel. yet, agree that often staff is as clueless as ever. but if you figure out what's important, such as a really good mattress and nice sheets, and you get that, you won't be as annoyed.

this topic would be ripe for spoofing. =)

a hotel manager who wanted to be ranked as '7 stars' or something, a la Spinal Taps.
